Торговые и культурные отношения между Индской цивилизацией и Месопотамией формировались во второй половине 3-го тысячелетия до н. э.[1], пока не прервались с исчезновением цивилизации долины Инда примерно в 1900 году до н. э.[2][3][4][5]. Многие археологические находки свидетельствуют о том, что морская торговля вдоль берегов Африки и Азии началась несколько тысячелетий назад[6]. Индская керамика и печати были найдены вдоль морских путей между Индом и Месопотамией, например в Рас-эль-Джинзе, на окраине Аравии[7][8].

Импорт Инда в Месопотамию

Семена гвоздики, которые, как считается, происходят с Молуккских островов в приморской Юго-Восточной Азии, были найдены на стоянке 2-го тысячелетия до н. э. в Терке[6]. Свидетельства импорта из Инда в Ур можно найти примерно с 2350 г. до н. э.[6]. Различные предметы из раковин, характерных для побережья Инда, в частности Trubinella Pyrum и Fasciolaria Trapezium, были найдены на археологических памятниках Месопотамии, датируемых примерно 2500—2000 гг. до н. э.[4][10]. Сердоликовые бусы из Инда были найдены в гробницах Ура, датируемых 2600—2450 гг.[11]. В частности, сердоликовые бусы с вытравленным рисунком белого цвета, вероятно, были привезены из долины Инда и изготовлены по технике кислотного травления, разработанной хараппцами[12][9][13]. Лазурит был в большом количестве завезён в Египет и уже использовался во многих гробницах периода Накада II (около 3200 г. до н. э.). Лазурит, вероятно, происходил из северного Афганистана, поскольку других источников того времени не известно, и должен был быть перевезён через Иранское плато в Месопотамию, а затем в Египет<[14][15].

Несколько индских печатей с хараппским письмом также были найдены в Месопотамии, в частности в Уре, Вавилоне и Кише[16][17][18][19][20][21]. Водяные буйволы, изображённые на аккадских цилиндрических печатях времён Нарам-Сина (около 2250 г. до н. э.), могли быть завезены в Месопотамию из Инда в результате торговли[22][23].

В записях Аккадской империи упоминается древесина, сердолик и слоновая кость, которые привозились из Мелуххи на мелухханских кораблях, причём Мелухха обычно рассматривается как месопотамское название долины Инда[4][11].

После распада Аккадской империи Гудеа, правитель Лагаша, импортировал из Мелуххи «полупрозрачный сердолик»[11]. Различные надписи также упоминают о присутствии мелухских торговцев и переводчиков в Месопотамии[11]. Из мест аккадского периода и Ура III было найдено около 20 печатей, которые имеют связь с Хараппой и часто используют хараппские символы или письменность[11].

Предполагаемые иконографические влияния

Различные авторы описывают возможные иконографические влияния Месопотамии на долину Инда[52]. Грегори Поссель отмечает «месопотамские темы в иконографии Инда», особенно рисунки, связанные с эпосом о Гильгамеше, предполагая, что «некоторые аспекты месопотамской религии и идеологии были бы приняты за чистую монету — это разумное предположение»[53]. Дамодар Дхармананд Косамби также описывает присутствие Гильгамеша на печатях Инда[54]. В археологических памятниках цивилизации долины Инда, в Мохенджо-Даро и Хараппе были найдены 24 каменные гематитовые гири месопотамского бочкообразного типа[55].

Есть также много примеров обратного влияния, когда печати и узоры долины Инда были найдены в Месопотамии.

Печати долины Инд

Некоторые печати Инда, по-видимому, свидетельствуют о возможном месопотамском влиянии, как, например, «мотив Гильгамеша», изображающий человека, сражающегося с двумя львами (2500—1500 гг. до н. э.)[59].

На нескольких печатях долины Инда изображена сцена борьбы между тигроподобным зверем и человеком с рогами, копытами и хвостом, которого сравнивают с месопотамским человеком-быком Энкиду, также соратником Гильгамеша, и предполагают трансляцию месопотамской мифологии[60][61][61].

Цилиндрические печати

В местах раскопок в долине Инда было найдено несколько редких цилиндрических печатей, которые свидетельствуют о месопотамском влиянии: они, вероятно, были изготовлены местными жителями, но в них использованы месопотамские мотивы[62]. На одной из таких цилиндрических печатей, печати Калибангана, изображена битва между людьми в присутствии кентавров[63][64]. На других печатях изображены процессии животных[64].

Другие исследователи предполагают, что цилиндрические печати свидетельствуют о влиянии долины Инда на Месопотамию. Это могло быть связано с сухопутной торговлей между двумя культурами[65].
