Кёрл, Джеймс Стивенс

Джеймс Стивенс Кёрл родился 26 марта 1937 года в Белфасте (Северная Ирландия)^[3]. Его отец, Джордж Стивенс Кёрл (1903—1974), работал инспектором агентов в страховой компании Eagle Star Insurance^[4][5]. Мать — Сара (в девичестве Маккинни).

Кёрл учился в Кэмпбелл-колледже в Белфасте, Университете Квинс в Белфасте и Белфастском колледже искусств. Затем он продолжил обучение в Оксфордской школе архитектуры (ныне часть Оксфордского университета Брукс), где получил квалификацию архитектора (1963). Изучал градостроительство под руководством Артура Корна (квалификация получена в 1967 году). В 1981 году получил докторскую степень в Университетском колледже Лондона^[3][6][7].

Кёрл был профессором Школы архитектуры и дизайна Ольстерского университета^[8], почётным профессором Университета Де Монтфорт в Лестере и приглашённым научным сотрудником в Питерхаусе (Кембридж) (1991—1992, 2002). В 2014 году Университет Де Монтфорт присвоил ему почётную степень доктора искусств в знак признания его вклада в изучение истории архитектуры, а также в интеллектуальную и культурную жизнь страны и региона^[8].

В 1960 году Кёрл женился на психиатре Эйлин Элизабет Блэксток; у них родились две дочери. В 1993 году он вступил во второй брак с профессором (Станиславой) Доротой Иванец^[3][9].

Джеймс Стивенс Кёрл умер 5 ноября 2025 года в возрасте 88 лет^[10].

Кёрл являлся членом Королевской ирландской академии, членом Лондонского общества антикваров, членом Общества антикваров Шотландии, членом Королевской корпорации архитекторов Шотландии, членом Королевского института архитекторов Ирландии, членом Королевского института британских архитекторов и ливрейным членом Достопочтенной компании дипломированных архитекторов лондонского Сити.

В сентябре 2017 года он был награждён медалью президента Британской академии за вклад в изучение истории архитектуры в Великобритании и Ирландии^[11].

Кёрл был первым председателем Оксфордского гражданского общества^[12], основанного в 1969 году. Он являлся сопокровителем Фонда мавзолеев и памятников, президентом Друзей старого кладбища Саутгемптона, вице-президентом Друзей кладбища Кенсал-Грин, членом Гильдии работников искусств и членом Оксфордского и Кембриджского клуба.
