Лёвдин, Пер-Улоф

Пер-У́лоф Лёвдин (нем. Per-Olov Löwdin; 28 октября 1916, Уппсала, Швеция — 6 октября 2000, Уппсала, Швеция) — шведский физик, квантовый химик, профессор Уппсальского университета с 1960 по 1983 годы, а также Университета Флориды до 1993 года.

Лёвдин был аспирантом Ивара Валлера. Он сформулировал в 1950 году симметричную схему ортогонализации для расчетов атомных и молекулярных орбиталей, значительно упростив метод жёсткой связи[1][2]. Эта схема является основой аппроксимации перекрытия нулевого дифференциала (ZDO), используемой в полуэмпирических теориях. В 1956 году он представил схему канонической ортогонализации, которая стала оптимальной для устранения приближенных линейных зависимостей базового набора[3]. Эти процедуры ортогонализации широко используются сегодня во всех современных квантово-химических расчётах[4][5].

Но знаменитая теорема Лёвдина о сопряжении принадлежат не ему. По его словам, Джордж Г. Холл и Кинг сделали официальное заявление после неофициального предположения Лёвдина.

Метод разделения задач квантовой химии Лёвдина лучше всего оценен благодаря серии из 14 статей по теории возмущений, опубликованных в период с 1963 по 1971 годы.

Также учёный был очень деятельным преподавателем: он открыл Летние школы квантовой химии в Уппсале примерно в 1958 году. В 1959 и 1960 годах Лёвдин начал проект квантовой теории в Флоридском университете как дочерний проект Уппсальской группы квантовой химии. В 1964 году к нему присоединился Джон Слейтер из Массачусетского технологического института. Международные зимние институты (первоначально проводившиеся на острове Санибел, а затем в Гейнсвилле) дали импульс сотням молодых латиноамериканских ученых в восьмидесятые и девяностые годы. В 1960 году он основал Симпозиум Санибел (Sanibel Symposium) совместно с Зимним институтом. Они проводятся ежегодно, начиная с 1960 года.

Лёвдин был избран членом Шведской королевской академии наук в 1969 году, Американского философского общества в 1983 году[6], и был членом комитета по присуждению Нобелевской премии по физике с 1972 по 1984 годы. Он был основателем «Международного журнала квантовой химии» и серии «Достижения квантовой химии». А также одним из основателей Международной академии квантовой молекулярной науки.
